Another round of what was that children's book?

A close friend is trying to remember the name of (wordless?) children's book he was obsessed with when he was very little.

What he remembers:
* it's about a cowboy and takes place in the American SW
* it's like one long side-scrolling chase- the cowboy starts out on a horse, loses that, tries a bike, loses that ... etc.
* possibly done in watercolors - he remembers the palette was very sunset-y.
* possibly not an American book - might've been European?
* Possibly from the 1970s or 1980s.
It's a long shot - but if anyone has any leads, they'd be appreciated! Thanks!

Any chance it might have been Anno's Journey?

This sounds very Glen Baxter, but I can't place it in his bibliography

Hmm, not wordless and not exactly a side scroller but the color palette makes me think of Pecos Bill by Steve Kellogg.

Best answer: I'm almost 100% certain that the book you're looking for is Crazy Cowboy by Guillermo Mordillo.
