Songs where the singer refers to their own name (and are called Steve)
February 27, 2019 4:05 AM
I have long admired the line in Stevie Wonder's 'Please Don't Go' where he sings: "Baby, please don't leave, don't leave Steve." I recently came across a song by Steve Monite, 'Only You', where he refers to himself (Steve) a lot, and it got me thinking: are there any other songs where the singer refers to their own name? (especially Steve)
I would love any songs where the singer refers to themself - Betty Wright, 'Let me be Your Lovemaker' comes to mind - but songs by and about 'Steve' are particularly appreciated.

Morrissey's 1989 single Ouija Board, Ouija Board contains the lines:
The table is rumbling
The glass is moving
"No, I was not pushing that time"
It spells: S.T.E.V.E.N
The table is rumbling
The glass is moving
"No, I was not pushing that time"
P.U.S.H.O. double-F
Annoyingly, Morrissey chose to edit this amusing bit of the song out in a 2010 remaster.

Robert Cray, "I Wonder"
I hear a car coming round the corner,
I hear footsteps on my front porch,
I see a shadow from the light above,
I hear a voice,
Oh it's not yours
Why does this happen,
What's going on,
I wonder,
Could this be a dream,
Or has Bob gone crazy,
I wonder,

Why do you fight Kathryn

Surely help will arrive soon

And, of course: "Alexander Hamilton,

Bruce Springsteen sort of does this in "Tenth Avenue Freezeout" - he sings about a singer named "Bad Scooter" meeting someone called "The Big Man", and ultimately "When the change was made uptown and the Big Man joined the band/From the coastline to the city, all the little pretties raise their hands".
"Bad Scooter" has the same initials as "Bruce Springsteen", so it's meant to be himself; and "The Big Man" was the band's and fans' nickname for Clarence Clemons, and the song was inspired by how the E Street Band really started cooking when Clarence joined them.

They Might Be Giants does this a bit. A couple examples:
When Will You Die
This is Dan
And that's Dan
And that's Marty on the drums
To complete the band
And I'm John
And he is also John
And all of us are wondering
When you're gonna die
Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love
John, I've been bad
and they're coming after me.
Done someone wrong,
and I fear that it was me.
This also comes up a bit in songs about being in the band itself, like They Got Lost.

Barrier Reef, Old 97's
So I sidled up beside her
Settled down and shouted, "Hi there.
My name's Stewart Ransom Miller
I'm a serial ladykiller."
She said, "I'm already dead."
And that's exactly what she said
So we tripped the lights fantastic
We was both made of elastic

When the capital's S, it is followed by a T; and it's probably me — Stephen Malkmus, again

The Barenaked Ladies' song "Enid" does this, to a degree. In a call out portion of the song where they give their nicknames from childhood, Ed Robertson can be said "They called me Eddie."
I believe the BNL song you're thinking of is actually "Grade 9". And I second that emotion.

This live version of “Until You Come Back to Me” has Stevie singing, “Please see Steve.” Ree is amazing on it, too. So fun.

I have heard a live Guy Clark recording of “Homegrown Tomatoes” where just before he gets with a break of fancy picking he says “Pick it, Guy!”

Billy Joel!
Piano Man:
'Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place."'

I see you’re only marking Steves as the answer, but there’s one more Leonard Cohen song I just thought of: “Famous Blue Raincoat,” which is in the form of a letter, and ends “Sincerely, L. Cohen.”

Not Steve, but Sufjan Stevens Vesuvius.
Sufjan
Follow your heart
Follow the flame or fall on the floor
Sufjan
The panic inside
The murdering ghost that you cannot ignore
