Lengthen mini-blinds strings?

How do I lengthen the strings that open and close my mini-blinds without introducing a knot that will clog up the works?

I moved into a house with mini-blinds which I like. However, it seems like someone has cut the strings in half and reattached the plastic things so that the blinds can only be closed halfway. I'd like to fix this, but I can't figure out how to make the strings longer without knotting them and I worry that knots won't fit through the pulley mechanism. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Best answer: This place sells restringing kits.

You have to restring them, unless you know how to splice braided cord, and are willing to spend the time. (It would be much quicker to put new strings in.)

If it is nylon cord you could just carefully melt the ends together. Please don't burn down your place in the process.

glue.

I don't think either melting or gluing would work for long. If you made a butt joint with either, it would fail quickly. If you laid the new cord next to the old and joined them, you'd have either a fat glued joint that wouldn't pass through the works, or a long, stiff melted joint that wouldn't pass through the works.

Put in new cord. If you pay close attention to how the old one is put in, it's not really hard.
