workflow for InDesign -- K4

Help me understand K4, the workflow engine for Adobe InDesign. How tightly integrated is it with the Adobe suite? Is it the best/only choice for that phase of content management, or does it provide just the basic CM functionality (library services, versioning, etc.) found in any enterprise CMS worth its salt? In other words, how many content management systems does it take to run a (mid-sized) publishing company?

basically, most magazine companies are going with K4 and InCopy or a customized version of it, looking to replace QPS--Quark and CopyDesk. I've heard there are only 3 good replacements for QPS, and each has drawbacks and strengths. Newspaper companies are using some other one of the 3--Woodbine? or something. There's more info here, esp. if you've been using Quark or QPS.
