Help me headbang

I like songs with heavy bass. Lots of heavy bass. There's something about it for me that's like one of those weighted anxiety blankets; I actually find it extremely relaxing to listen to (go figure). So I'm looking to make a playlist of songs with heavy bass.

To be a bit more clear: I'm not looking for great bass lines like in "(I Don't Want to Go To) Chelsea." I love that song, but I'm looking for something more like the extensive bass vamping heard in "Self Esteem," by Offspring.

Some further examples of what I'm looking for:
"Enter Sandman," by Metallica
"Brain Stew," by Green Day
"Glycerine" by Bush
"Come Out and Play," also by Offspring
"Papercut," by Linkin Park

Pandora tells me that these all might go under the category of "dirty guitar riffs," so I'll throw that out there, too. As you can probably tell from the above songs, I prefer rock, but I'm fine with hip-hop too. Just no death metal, please.

Thanks, musicheads of MeFi!

Best answer: Hey so this is coming at this sideways but if the super bassy noises are truly weighted blanket territory for you (ME TOO), you may really like this noise generator. Drop the right end and really pump up the brown, red, and orange sliders.

Best answer: How to you feel about electronic music, or funk?
E.g. Flat Beat has some serious bass, and there's a whole genre there you may like.

Best answer: Bullet the Blue Sky, by U2.
Come Together, by The Beatles.

Best answer: There's a filthy bass solo right after the manic drum solo in the middle of Golden Earring's version of Eight Miles High that might hit your spot.

Do You Love Me?
Jubilee Street (especially pronounced in live performances) (official video is NSFW)

Also, his work with Grinderman:
Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man
No Pussy Blues

Best answer: Can't go wrong with Om, whose music is almost exclusively vocals, bass, and drums; try out "State of Non-Return"

Possibly too heavy given your statement about death metal, but Nate Newton's bass on Converge's "Trigger" is absolutely massive

Great, core bass riff on Mogwai's "Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home"

In a sorta similar vein, Jakob's "Oran Mor"

Back to the gnarlier stuff, Brian Cook's bass playing in Russian Circles is divine, e.g. "Mladek"

Ben Shepherd was always the most underrated part of Soundgarden: "The Day I Tried to Live"

Huge bass from Nicole Estill on True Widow's "Skull Eyes"

I don't even know where to start with Chris Squire (RIP) of Yes: "Roundabout" is an obvious choice; "Starship Trooper" is a personal favorite; "Tempus Fugit" is corny as fuck but my god that bassline

And let's round it out with another one that might be a little heavy, but fuck it I love High on Fire and Jeff Matz delivers the goods on "Snakes for the Divine," what a monster of a chorus

Best answer: Gonna +1 Ben Shepherd from Soundgarden. Hands All Over is my favorite.

Morphine. Buena. Sharks. You Speak My Language.

Fugazi. Waiting Room.

Jane's Addiction. No One's Leaving.

English Beat. Mirror in the Bathroom.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin. There's not a guitar anywhere in the mix, even though you might hear some uptuned bass in there. Plenty of vamping. Not Sleeping Around. Grey Cell Green. Kill Your Television.

Spoon - Rhthm and Soul

Best answer: "Boris the Spider" - The Who
"YYZ" - Rush
"My Name is Mud - Primus
"Barracuda - Heart
"Fool" - Rollins Band (Most of Weight, really)
"One of These Days" - Pink Floyd (the intro once the bass kicks in is amazing, I could listen to this on a loop for hours)
"Supernaut" - 1000 Homo DJs
"I Only Lie When I Love You - Royal Blood (two-piece, bass player and drummer)
"War Again - Oingo Boingo
"Visions of You - Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart (a little more mellow, but bass drives this song)
"The City Sleeps - MC 900 Ft Jesus (again, mellow but bass driven)
Not sure this was released on album, but you might enjoy Buckethead doing a bass solo live.
You mentioned Metallica earlier but not sure if you're familiar with their early stuff or not - just in case not, here's Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) which features Cliff Burton really shredding bass.
I love the bass in Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting" and "Days and Days."
Also see L7's Bricks are Heavy, especially "Scrap" which has bass as thick as sludge.

Response by poster: Oh my god, everyone, these are all so great! I was listening to them while I waited for a friend and I didn’t even want to take off my headphones to talk to him. (I did — I wasn’t raised in a barn.) I’m not going to mark Best answers yet because I hope people will keep answering, but they’re basically all best answers so far. Thanks, yay!

Response by poster: Oh, and Soundinhabitant, thanks for mentioning Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. I loved them when I was in my 20s and haven’t listened to them for a zillion years. My friends and I started a band and tried to cover “Kill Your Television” but we sucked so badly we gave up in disgust. Hahaha, memories.

Several days late to the party, but I have to put in a mention for King's X, especially their Dogman album. Check out Black the Sky but really the whole album is great. I still use it as a reference for testing low end on sound systems.
