Another round of Name Those Cats!
February 22, 2018 3:24 PM   Subscribe

We're adopting two rescue cats and we can't agree on names.

They are probably sisters, and probably around 18 months old. The tortoiseshell is pretty outgoing, very alert and curious, and the ginger is very shy and prefers to hide a lot. We like sci-fi, history, and names that sound different enough for the cats to distinguish them.

Names considered so far:
- Esme and Magrat
- Jodie and Verity (from Doctor Who's Jodie Whittaker and Verity Lambert)
- Lilith and Maris
- Elizabeth and Mary
- Jubilee and Rogue.

They don't have to be matching names, that's just the only ones we've thought of so far.

(They do have names at the moment, but their names were changed when they came into foster care. Ginger was Jim, then Bonnie; tortie was Rosie, then Babs.)

Ruth and Naomi... full disclosure, we have a pair of calicos who are almost-certainly sisters named Ruth and Naomi. One is shy, one is always demanding attention, and the names are great.

"Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay" is the line that decided us!

Best answer: Janeway and Seven (full disclosure: my cats are Janeway and Archer Bearcat, but Bearcat would have been Seven if he was smarter or less cat-like!)
Bobbie and Chrisjen
Dax and Kira
Cheery and Angua
Susan and Binky
Naomi and Amos (but only if one of them is particularly dangerous)

It matters not as (a) they never come when you call them, (b) you will be calling them *other* kinds of names when they dig up your plants and tear the couch.

But they are real cuties!

I see day and night names. How about Hati and Sköll from Norse mythology? Sköll is a wolf who chases the sun (for the ginger kitty) and Hati chases the moon.

Another thought, if you like sci fi, name them Zora and Pris. Pris would be the ginger, Zora the dark tortie. Full disclosure, my cat siblings are Roy and Pris, so I may be a bit biased towards Blade Runner names.

I had no regrets naming my cat BuddyFriend, so I suggest the names Buddy and Friend. The tortie looks like a Buddy and the ginger looks like a Friend to me.

Torties I have known: Wookie, Weasel, Selma. I have only known boy cat gingers: Sonny, Dr. Jacoby, Allegheny known as Al, Binx.

I love the suggestion for the moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos. We used to have a pair of blue classic tabbies with those names, both girls, though that didn't matter. The names translate as fear and terror, which amused us so very much as they went tearing around the house after each other. They were wonderful kitties.

To me, they would be Abby and Ramona, but frankly Esme and Magrat are the best cat names I've heard in months.
