Looking for a late 80s/early 90s R&B music video

I only remember a few details, but it's driving me crazy!

Can't get this off the tip of my tongue. The video may have been black and white, featuring a young man of Latino heritage but singing in English. He had short black hair and was singing about a failed relationship/a woman he missed. I think there may have been a black-and-white checkerboard floor pattern in the video too?

I think the artists still sings today.

I know this is vague - please let me know if there are any details that would help. It's driving me crazy! Thank you so much!!

Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" features a black-and-white checkerboard pattern in the video, though it's from 1999.

Given my taste in music and when I grew up, this should be in my bailiwick but more details would be appreciated. Were you in the US when you saw it? Do you remember if it was on MTV or some other station?

It's not late 80s or early 90s, but the style is similar to some of his other, earlier videos, so maybe it's one of his songs.
