Songs That Make You Go "THAT'S MY SONG!"
June 19, 2017 11:01 AM   Subscribe

People of Metafilter: what are your jams? I'm talking about the songs that are so instantly recognizable and hype-worthy that the second they come up at random on your Spotify playlist/on the speakers at a store/at karaoke night/at a dance party, you are 100% delighted and cannot help but IMMEDIATELY get stoked and/or dance-y. I'm not necessarily talking about favorite songs overall (although there could be overlap), but about the songs that take you from 0 to 10 instantaneously, especially when they catch you by surprise. All genres welcomed and encouraged!

Flo Rida is my #1 for this. Nearly every time I hear one of his songs I laugh in delight. Zillionaire!

But the best is Club Can't Handle Me. The week I was diagnosed with cancer I had this song on repeat in the car over and over and over because it was the only thing that made me feel not terrible.

I don't know anything about Flo Rida personally so please if you know bad things about him please don't tell me.

I love that song and I love Dolby's version but ever since reading that he wrote it with the hopes of selling it to Michael Jackson I wonder every time I hear it what a Jackson version would have sounded like.

'Hypnotize' , 'Juicy' by Notorious BIG
'Dancing on My Own' - Robyn
anything by Mace, pretty much. 'Can't Nobody Hold Me Down', 'Feel So Good' , etc
'6 Foot 7 Foot' by Lil Wayne
'You Can Do It' -- Ice Cube

Anything peppy by Kanye, really. Stronger, Flashing Lights, Good Life, etc.

'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga is nearly retro by now, but still is pop perfection.

Justin Timberlake's entire solo career. Plus 'Bye Bye Bye' and 'Dirty Pop' by NSync.

Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
I always wanted to make an ultra-cool dance routine to this, with weird jerky robot motions that matched the "da-dum, da-dum" section. Since I have roughly the dancing skills of a stoned hippie, I mostly just bop around until my neck and hips hurt. But I love this song.

Ca Plane Pour Moi - Plastic Bertrand
This is a song I'd lost for literally over 15 years - all I remembered was "it's French or something," and that I thought it had a counting sequence in it. Then I heard a fragment of the tune on a Pepsi commercial, shrieked "THAT'S THE SONG!" and hit Google for "French song pepsi commercial" which eventually turned up the name, some Youtube links, and sites trying to explain the lyrics. (Short version: it's the morning after a bender. The lyrics make as much sense as a college party hangover.)

Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
I was young when this came out. Young and innocent. Enough so that it took many, many years for me to notice the drug reference in the band name.

500 Miles (I'm Gonna Be) - The Proclaimers
The song led me to the movie, Benny and Joon, which has a romance between a Buster Keaton wannabe (Johnny Depp) and a mentally ill artist (Mary Stuart Masterson) who lives with her brother.

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
This was the song I remember dancing to at BayCon, and it always makes me want to get up and move around. Is one of my nice happy-bouncy songs that's associated with nothing but good memories.
