Chicago Vehicle Ticketing

does anyone have experience with parking a car in chicago that has an expired registration??? asking for a friend - details after the jump.
My friend has a car registered in California but she is currently living in Chicago and parking it on the street. Her registration expired as of 3/31/16 and she has paid for the registration renewal but is waiting for the new sticker to arrive in the mail. The first day after expiration (today), she has already received TWO tickets on the windshield. She's looking for a private garage temporarily, but any suggestions on how to deal with this situation in the meantime? Any hope of contesting the two tickets already given? Any advice is appreciated!

If she has the receipt, with the date of payment, she can probably go to court and have the tickets dismissed (I'm not sure about an out-of-state registration, but if you're in-state and renew in time but have to wait for the sticker to be mailed, it's easily dismissed after the fact). Otherwise, yeah, private lot or private driveway is her best bet.
Worse, cops are on the lookout for expired stickers because Illinois has stopped sending out renewal notices, so it's a big moneymaker ticket right now.

Is one of the tickets because she doesn't have a city sticker? There's also a 30 day grace period from when she first moved to Chicago (or became a resident) fro that, but she'll have to again contest the ticket (and buy the sticker separately, I believe). More here under "Grace Period..."

By "registration" you mean the city sticker, right? It's a different thing from your state vehicle registration. The city sticker grace period is only for newly purchased vehicles and people moving to the city. If your friend was living here for a while and just forgot to get a sticker I think you're SOL. Your 30 day grace period starts the day you move.

I think it might be more complicated than that, because vehicles with out of state plates (which is legal if you're e.g. a student and your residency is in another state but you're going to school in Chicago) don't have to have a city sticker. So if her car only recently required a city sticker, she might still be able to contest the ticket.
