Is there a forum where I can reliably find eclectic music suggestions?
February 7, 2016 2:19 PM

Is there some general music forum where I might ask things like "Suggest me some music that sounds desert-themed" or "What are some good songs with lyrics that aren't about love and dancing?" or "Suggest some songs that include a violin solo."

It's easy to find "music similar to [artist]" or "music belonging to [genre]" but more often I find that what I'm looking for will be a single track from some album, or a handful of tracks from a movie/game/etc.

Where do I go for this? Is there some gigantic music forum I'm not aware of where people could reliably answer such questions?

There's a gigantic music forum you are aware of where people can reliably answer such questions.

Okaaay, I suspected as much, but I figured it wouldn't be in good taste to clog AskMe weekly with such questions. Surely there is a forum more dedicated to music where I can request stuff life this? Seems like... I dunno, it's the internet. How can there not be a giant music forum somewhere? Closest I have found is reddit's music subs (which are awful and their music tastes are so limited, and the specific ones are too compartmentalized) and what.cd (which I have no access to, so can't try it).

Although it's not a forum, 8tracks might be what you're looking for. It's a music streaming site/app that plays playlists curated by all kinds of people, and it is my go-to for times when I feel like listening to more of a theme than a genre. Type whatever strikes you into the tag search ("leather jacket," or maybe, "Turkish theremin" for example) and, chances are, someone has already selected some great music to introduce you to.

I Love Music might be good for this purpose.
