Is rock music even a thing anymore?

Are there recent rock albums or bands that are of some "universal" or broad interest to a large number of people between the ages of, say, 16 and 24? Or have r&b, rap, and other genres totally replaced rock music? [more inside]

Improvisational music-making websites?

I'm looking for something like Patatap but with a bit more structure (like record, rewind, stop, that kind of thing), so I can just let a tune flow from my soul and then play it back or save it. Creating music without having to think about it too much, maybe just learning the instrument/website as I go along. I don't want to get sucked into learning a DAW; this is just for temporary fun. Is there anything like that? Thanks!

Good albums to sing along with on my commute?

I want to sing in the car, both because I won't be overheard and because I'll feel happier driving (an activity that I find inherently tense and unpleasant). But, it's difficult for me to find albums whose songs mostly have a manageable vocal range and lyrics that are either familiar or somewhat accessible. What albums have you enjoyed singing along to while you drive? Thanks in advance for any help.

Where to dance to 80s music in NYC?

I love dancing to 80s (and 90s) music, but with Culture Club now closed, I'm not sure where to go in New York City. Are there any new dance places that are devoted to 80s/90s music, or that have "80s nights"? Thanks!

I Need An External DVD Player For Music, Not Burning

I recently purged most of my music CD/DVD collection. Now, I want to listen to what's left using an external player. Are any players targeting music playback rather than burning/duplication on the market? Should I be looking for specific attributes/brands? Needs to have a USB 3 connection. Currently have an old Amazon Basic USB 2 unit that's noisy enough to hear with headphones on.

Asian pop song ID

Dear Hive Mind, my girlfriend and I recently spent an enjoyable couple of hours at a karaoke bar in Bangkok. I want to learn more murder ballads - specifically American ones (though if you really want to recommend something from another tradition I'm not going to complain). I spend a lot of time singing to myself while doing housework or knitting and so would prefer to learn arrangements that can be easily and satisfyingly sung without accompaniment. Thank you!

Female Sad Americana Music - Recommendations?

I've been curating some playlists and realised that some of my favourite genres are really dude heavy. I love most inheritors of Springsteen, as well as his music. I'd love to build out a mix/playlist for them all to rock out to. But what goes on it? Taylor Swift? Is Adele too grownup? Is One Direction still a thing? Specific tracks recommended by actual kids (or grownups who know these things) would be very appreciated!

90s Music Filter: Can you help me track down this song and video clip?

I can't get this dance song out of my head, but I can't find it anywhere. I don't recall it being a particular hit. My memory of the chorus is "Come with me, tonight's the night, come with me, tonight's the night, can't you see I can't do it alone, I wanna be with you tonight". My memory of the video clip was that it was in black and white and set in a club, with various people lip-synching the song.

Let's start at the very beginning: sight reading

I've depended on my ear all my life to play music. I learn new pieces by listening, playing back what I've heard, and then slowly correcting my errors in listening by reading the notes in spots I think I'm unclear on. In the past it was a cool party trick, but I want to stop using this approach because it slows down the rate at which I pick up new pieces, it's sloppy, and without a teacher these days, it's difficult to pick up my numerous errors. I am also awful at sight reading. [more inside]

Simple CD player for a person with Alzheimer's

My mother-in-law has Alzheimer's. She loves (and has always loved) music. But her old CD player just broke. I need to find a new CD player that is as simple as possible to use. Ideally, it would have just three buttons--open/close (to insert the CD), play, and stop--and it would be possible to connect it to external speakers (with or without a receiver is ok). I've had this song chorus in my head since 1990. Please send help.

I went to summer camp in northern Minnesota in the late 80s/early 90s. I was exposed to all kinds of awesome music there from kids all over the country, which was a huge big thing for young midwestern me. I remember sitting on a cold lake beach listening intently to a mix tape one of the older girls was playing, and there is a song that has stuck in my head ever since. The chorus is something like "So wave goodbye to everything you knew." I can still noodle it out on piano and guitar, but I can't identify the song. Please help. [more inside]
