Where can I buy Sirius Black's coat?

I am obsessed with Sirius Black's housecoat. I love the peak lapels, warm dark color, and widely spaced stripes. I'm also a university professor where I could wear something like this on a regular basis. I've scoured thrift stores for years, with little luck. Where can I find this garment or similar?

(I know the actual wardrobe item was auctioned off several years ago for thousands of pounds)

Response by poster: if it helps, I wear a size 40 short in most menswear.

Best answer: The photo you pointed to was lifted from this costume maker in China, so…there? They're clearly set up to ship internationally.

If you're searching, that isn't a housecoat. A housecoat is more like a dressing gown or robe, not anything as tailored as this.

Best answer: Yes, the search term you're looking for in this instance is frock coat. This particular frock coat is velvet.

It's more a frock coat, if that helps your search? Etsy is predictably fuzzy on the concept of frock coats, but it's a place to start. I'm thinking a local tailor might also be able to assist?

Best answer: Also, note how Gary Oldman is posing. He's not a fat man, but I doubt even he could button up that coat comfortably. Maybe you too don't care whether you could button it up, but note how that defines the look of the garment in the photo.

Best answer: Well, I don't know who that is, but he's wearing a frock coat. There are several sites that cater to Western Wear and Steampunk. I don't know that you'll find one in green velvet pinstripe there, but that's where I'd start.

The Gentleman's Emporium
The Western Emporium
The Old West Gallery
Sheplers

Some of these places even specialize in replicas of costumes worn by specific characters. You can buy a replica of The Man With No Name's hat and poncho, for example.

Use your google.

Best answer: You might take a look at Gentleman's Emporium's frock coats, although they don't have a huge selection in terms of colors or stripes. Take a close look at each one though; I ordered one of their sack coats and had to return it because it was cut really strangely, nicely fitting in the body but with huuuge shoulders. Their customer service is great, though, and I've been happy with other things I've bought from them; coats are a tricky thing to buy sight unseen.

I agree with zadcat that the costume garment has a super-slim cut, which combined with being tailored specifically for Gary Oldman gives it that really sharp look. If you want to go the bespoke route it won't be cheap, but you'd probably have a better chance of getting the stripes and/or color you're after. Their website appears to be in flux right now, but Quartermaster Shop in Gettysburg Pennsylvania does really excellent work; a friend of mine ordered a custom-made civil war-era military frock coat from them that was absolutely superb. He lives in Massachusetts, so they gave him a worksheet with all the measurements they needed, and used that to make a muslin test which they mailed to him to try on before making the actual coat. The finished frock fit him perfectly and the workmanship and materials were top notch. (I think he paid close to $600 for it. I would think a civilian frock without all the piping and fancy trim might cost a little less.)

Best answer: That looks like more of a chalk stripe than pin stripe. I'd include that search term.
