What is this tree and seed?

What is this tree and seed (nut?)? Eight or nine feet tall, growing next to a sidewalk and clearly intentionally planted. That seed is marble- or dime-sized, and I just picked this Friday, so it would have to be fruiting now in Austin, Texas. Don't worry, I'm not going to eat it. Just curious. Thanks!

Best answer: I'm pretty sure dayintoday has it; I had the same question and was thrilled when I saw one at the 'What is It?' exhibit at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. Here is what they have to say on the subject.
