Hosted Minecraft PE solutions

A friend of mine is looking to use Minecraft PE with a group of 20 kids who will be playing on iPads. They're looking for an opinion on what the best way to host a server will be. They want a persistent server that will be available around the clock, they will not be playing with mods, and they'd like it to be as maintenance free as possible. What are good, reliable, and scam free hosting solutions for mobile Minecraft?

Hosting their own server is a possibility, but they'd prefer a subscription service rather than taking the effort to set up a personal server.

The first question is whether the kids will all be using the same network, because a LAN server is dead simple (though the "owner" would need to stay logged on for anyone else to join).

Our family has a server (not LAN) with just a few friends invited, so I know that's doable, but my husband set it up and I couldn't say how. So again, if they're all on the same network, it's super easy but there are fewer options for "cheats" that way (i.e., you will lose everything if you die; "set home" is not an option; and so on). I say this because if you can clarify, you may get clearer answers. Happy crafting. So fun!

Response by poster: They'll be colocated for part of the time, but they want IP acceas for after the kids head home. So a stable IP server is ideal.

If you're willing to go all the way, you could host a minecraft server on google app engine. This is far from the simplest solution though.

I don't have any direct experience with paid subscription servers, but some googling shows there are a bunch of them. https://ggservers.net/ looks like it would be $6 a month for your needs. A couple people on reddit had good things to say about https://www.beastnode.com/.

http://lowendbox.com/ Is a decent list of cheap virtual server hosting. You'd need to how to get from raw linux server to "minecraft server" though. In my experience running minecraft server on a container-type (eg, openvz) server works fine, which can make it really cheap. You just need to have enough RAM.

Maybe try their official service? Easy but $13/mo.

Response by poster: Realms doesn't support PE yet (and the last mention of the team working on it is from last year). If they're buying rack space on a server farm, then I think they may as well just pay for the perks of specifically Minecraft hosting to reduce the labor costs of having to set up a system. Does anyone have any experience with Minecraft hosting solutions in general, PE or no?
