Diversity training for Acting Teachers

Readings on race and intersectionality in the performing arts?

A theater professor in my family is seeking tips on how to make the study of acting more inclusive. She teaches scene study to undergraduates, and would love pedagogical material/theory as well as suggestions for her syllabus.

Gosh. I haven't got anything that really specifically answers your question, but some places to start:

Some stuff, specific to women in theatre, here.

Contacting theatre companies with a mandate of increasing diversity/representation on stages would probably be helpful, eg. Obsidian Theatre, Fu-Gen, Cahoots.

NPR article about recent cases of 'Yellowface'

There's some stuff in the American Theatre Reader, like "The (R)Evolution of Black Theatre", by Paul Carter Harrison.

Really barely scratching the surface here as I'm not really qualified, but, maybe that'll open up further areas of research.

Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed is seminal. The Freire Institute has trainings and resources that you can look up.

By extension, there is the Theatre of the Oppressed and conferences that your professor can attend and get materials from Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed .
