Unlock my Samsung Galaxy S3

A friend of mine has given me their old Samsung Galaxy S3. Yay! It is locked and the carrier won't unlock it without forcing a fee to be paid. Boo!

If at all possible, I would like to avoid having to pay a ridiculous amount of money for someone to tap a few numbers into my new-to-me phone. I have tried this method, and could get into the menu, but failed after the step where you select SHA whatever off, then go back and select the fourth option--it's not there.

Can anyone help? I have an aversion to paying a ridiculous ($30-40, depending on whether I get Rogers to do it or go to a random cellphone store) fee just to unlock the damn thing.

I've had several phones unlocked at random cellphone stores in Toronto. I've never paid more than $20 and it has always seemed like money well spent.

I had a good experience unlocking a Samsung phone a few years ago with this website: http://www.unlocksamsungonline.com/. I think it cost €16, which was less than half of what my phone company wanted to do it, and it took a lot less time than the phone company said it would.

Response by poster: Thanks folks. I am looking to do this without spending money I can barely afford for someone to go tap-tap-tap for 30 seconds.

Hope this helps. I have not tried it myself, but the xda forums are usually very helpful. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176719

I second Davidvanb. Go to the xda forum, read, read, read. Create an account and ask how to proceed. They will support you all the way. Good luck. I'm using a Galaxy 3 now and it's a good phone.
