Please Help Me Think Of 40 Love Songs and How Should I Package Them?

Mr. Westridge's 40th birthday is coming up. I have decided to give him 40 of something every day for the forty days leading up to his actual birthday. One thing I want to give him is a collection of 40 love songs but I'm running out of ideas for songs. Also what would be the best way to gather all these songs together and present them?

I was thinking of gathering/buying them and downloading them to a flash drive to give him. Picky detail: we are not Apple product users and i-tunes really messes with my computer so that's out. I found a couple lists of songs on questions like this one and this one but would still love other ideas.

I don't really have a preference for genre of music, just something that is obviously a love song and I guess I'd prefer more recognizable, well known songs. Raunchy stuff is fine, maybe even a plus.

The Luckiest by Ben Folds is my favorite love song.

I love the song "I Will" by the Beatles.

If I was doing this, I'd probably just save them all in a special playlist on iTunes/Amazon Music/Whatever. Or if you want a physical copy, it is pretty easy to burn songs to a CD, but it would take multiple discs, possibly.

I would put them all on a flashdrive then he can upload them to his PC or wherever.

As to what songs, it would be helpful if you can narrow it down a bit for us. Tell us what you've got already and what kind of music you/he likes. Love songs is a HUGE category and frankly, love songs tend to have meaning because you listened to them with someone special or you heard them at a particular point in your life...if you're stuck, maybe think about that a bit.

If you are ever short of love songs, there's always 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields.

69 Love Songs was going to be my suggestion too. The Book of Love is my favorite.

And since you said raunchy is okay, TV on the Radio's Lover's Day is my favorite pick for joyfully raunchy.

What a lovely idea. You could buy an inexpensive mp3 player and upload them to that... a couple of love song ideas: everything I do by Bryan Adams; one by U2; time after time by cyndi lauper. For comedy, you could add Kiss the Girl from the little Mermaid.

Less well known, and I seem to recommend it a lot because it has some powerful associations for me: Robots, by Dan Mangan.

This is a little more upbeat than some of the other suggestions, but Inside Out by Imelda May is one of my favorite love songs.

Raunchy?
"Jackson" by Johnny and June Cash.
especially if you can get the live recording (from San Quentin, I think?) where in the intro he is clearly leering at her and she tells him to stop starting at her chest ("I like to watch you talk..." "I'm talking with my mouth! It's way up here!")...

(less raunchy, more recent: Edward Sharpe & the magnetic zeros, "home")

The version of of One by Cowboy Junkies is exquisite. Anniversary Song by Cowboy Junkies is also wonderful. They've got a melancholy reflective undertone, but that's life, man.

Here's a playlist of songs I made for my sisters wedding on 8Tracks. 8tracks is a pretty nice way to collect and share a playlist, especially if you just want it to play sort of ambient-ly rather than hunting for songs like on a CD. I use Spotify exclusively now but it's still a great interface and has a really easy to use app.

Baby, Let Me Follow You Down - an old folk song popularized by Bob Dylan. It's just gorgeous.

I'd go with a Spotify playlist. Can be accessed almost anywhere, even downloaded for listening offline.

What about one love song from each year since 1975? Google would probably be your friend for this task... Have fun with this. It sounds like a great gift!
