Live Music Visual Projection Software

I would like to find a software program that allows me to trigger photos/short video both live and preplanned. More explanation inside.

So i am a musician who makes kind of downer music. Not a lot of energy, distortion or super hyped up parts. I have an idea of making a kind of projection set up like i've seen in art installations before. I want to hang a gauzy sheet and project images and video clips onto the sheet from behind. I want to find a program that does two things. 1. Allows me to trigger photos/video clips in a slideshow format with a footpedal. So if i want to play an acoustic guitar song i can vary the rhythm and just switch between scenes with my foot. 2. Project photos/video clips in sync with backing tracks, which i record quite often.

Anyone know of a good software that does this?

Maybe something inspired by MilkDrop?

I have no idea if it is still supported or considered any good but arkaos VJ did exactly this, driven by MIDI, around 2005. You might also look at VVVV, if you're on Windows. If you're willing to tackle learning it, Max is also a good option.
