Sh-boom
February 11, 2014 3:58 PM
I need to know more songs/artists that are going to scratch the itch that "Sh-boom" by The Chords started. Go.
Let's warm up that itch with "Cold Feet" by The Big Six.

You might find something on this CD: Dick Clark's Jukebox Gems: The Best of Doo Wop

I totally dig this song, too, but it would help if you could be a little more explicit about the itch you're hoping to scratch. Are you looking for doo-wop in general, or other songs with similar harmonies and arrangements, etc.? Male groups only, or female singers, too? Anything upbeat, or are ballads okay? (I have several recommendations I could make, but I'm also not sure I'm on the right track.)

I guess doo-wop in general? Is this song doo-wop?
I love the harmonies, and the fact that they're all singing the same words on the same rhythm but holding a really nice harmony. Male and female, I'd be interested to hear both.

Ah! Well then, here's a few:
Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Why Do Fools Fall in Love (skip forward to about 2:20)
The Del-Vikings, Come and Go with Me
The Dells, Oh What a Night
The Crystals, Then He Kissed Me

Yes, the song is doo wop. My main advice is to listen to as much doo wop as you can find. Most of my specific suggestions are on this ridiculously overpriced, but excellent, box set.
"Denise"
"I Wonder Why" - Dion & the Belmonts
"Get A Job"
"Blue Moon" - Marcels
"Dedicated to the One I Love" - The Shirelles
"Tell Me Why"
"I Do"
"Barbara Ann" - The Beach Boys

Ooh, but not a bad price if buying it used. Thanks for the recommendation!

My Boyfriend's Back
Even though Sh-Boom isn't a cappella, you might find that a cappella groups scratch that synchronized harmony itch really well. For example, looking up "a cappella doo wop" came up with this.

Two that rocked my world and are very much in the same vein:
What Time Is It? - The Jive Five
I Only Have Eyes For You - The Flamingos
That last one served as first dance with my wife at our wedding. Listen with care, please.

And if you still want more after that, there's Volume 2 and Volume 3!

OK, no links because I'm on my phone, but "Sh-boom" scratches a very specific itch for me that is also scratched by "Twilight Time" and "Standing in the Shadows of Love". I cannot articulate why, but maybe it'll be the same for you. Also, check out the singer Billy Eckstine.

Mr Sandman pairs with Sh-boom very nicely in a playlist.

I'd highly suggest putting that song, along with some of the recommendations here, into a new station on Pandora or Spotify. You'll get other ideas from the playlist and you can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to help refine the selection. It's a great way to dive into new music.

My Doo-Wop gateway was "I'm In The Mood For Love" by the Chimes.
