Omega tips wanted

Have you played the old rogue-like game Omega? I re-discovered it recently and remember enjoying it a long time ago, but nowadays I can't get past the first five minutes. All of my games go like this: give a bit of charity to be lawful, join the paladins to get a weapon, go to the arena to make some money, die in the third or fourth round. Any tips would be appreciated. A mini-walkthrough that would actually get me out of the city as a half-viable character would be great!

Are you generating a character based on your own stats? Lie shamelessly (or as much as it'll let you). Enjoy your lizard bits!

Best answer: Well, the FAQ is here. My recollection is that the standard initial strategy is, yeah, lie about your stats or roll until you get good ones, then join the wizard's guild, hack the ATM (the FAQ has a little guidance about this) to get some money and drop to slightly chaotic, join the thieves' guild, give charity to get back to lawful, join the paladin's guild, fight in the arena for a few fights until it gets too hard, then go into the hedge maze by the palace. If you can make it to the center of the hedge maze to find the oracle, she'll give your first quest and you're off.
