Trying to track down a quote

I think I read something online once, a scan of an old magazine interview, in which Warren Zevon says of Randy Newman: I don't like him because he's so talented and he's not really trying, it's so frustrating for another songwriter to see someone squandering so much of their potential.

The original interview would have been ... early '80s maybe? And of course it's possible I'm remember the identity of one or both parties wrong, though I don't think so.

Does that ring a bell for anyone else? Or are there other good examples of artists in whatever medium expressing a similar sentiment?

Stephin Merritt once said something very similar about Tom Waits circa 1995, but I can't stand wading through endless Stephin Merritt interviews to find the exact quote.

Best answer: There's a mention of him talking about Randy Newman in the comments section of this Warren Zevon hub page (the 5th, 6th, and 7th comments). The commenter references two 1978 interviews, but doesn't say where they appeared. You might be able to contact the person who made the comment via that site to ask about them. I haven't been successful locating a 1978 WZ article online, but it's hard with no info other than the year. (I can say that he didn't mention Newman in the 1981 Rolling Stone article.)

A Google Books search is usually really good for questions like this. I checked, and went through the first three pages of results, but didn't find anything specific. However, Zevon's wife, Crystal, did write a biography of him, so you may be able to get in touch with her if you're desperate...

Response by poster: Well I just tried this question on a dedicated Zevon forum and got the answer -- it's not quite how I remembered it though:
