Technical Theater for Kids

I'm trying to find out if there are summer programs for kids (~13-15) who want to get involved in technical theater or backstage work in NYC. There seem to be a lot of paid summer acting classes, but I'm not sure where to find or look for backstage volunteer work for young people. If anyone has specific programs or places to start looking, I'd appreciate it.

Oh I wish you were asking about the Philadephia area, because I have a perfect program in mind.

Here is a listing of theatre programs compiled by NYU - http://www.nyu.edu/family.care/child.care/arts.html. You could look through this and see if there are any that offer technical theater experience.

Best of luck finding something!

Response by poster: I'd be interested in the Philly one for comparison.

Upper Darby Summer Stage. (It's actually suburban Philadelphia, but close enough to the edge of the city that some of our participants are from the city)

It is a bit harder to find info about the technical theater program - there is only one small paragraph on the website- , but it has been running for years (maybe as long as the acting program) - every show is supported by a group of professionals working with the high-school-aged tech crew, who learn about things such as lighting, sound, set construction, costumes.

It may be worth reaching out to some of your local community theaters / theater camps and see what they offer by way of technical theater experience. It might not be advertised as heavily as the acting classes, but it might be there.

MeMail me if you want any more specific info.
