I'm looking for travel insurance in the field

I will be doing 2 months of archaeological field work in South Africa this summer. It's my first time in the field abroad, and I'm interested in travel insurance since field work is potentially riskier than regular travel.

Specifically, I'm interested in coverage for the following things:
-My medical insurance covers me out-of-network in foreign countries. This means that I'll have a $6000 deductible before they start to cover anything. I'd like to get this gap covered, which seems pretty standard from the policies I've browsed so far (through AAA and USAA).

-My grandparents have been having a lot of health problems lately. If, God forbid, one of them were to pass while I was gone, I would really want to be able to interrupt my trip without worrying about the cost. The insurance quotes I have looked at so far have been vague about exactly what family members can qualify for trip interruption coverage.

So can anyone recommend good travel insurance companies? I'm traveling from the US, btw, and will be gone for about 2 months.

Are you doing this through a university as a student or staff? I would be very surprised if they don't cover you with some sort of fieldwork insurance policy. It might not cover returning for your grandparents, though.

Response by poster: It's related to my university, but I think the answer is no on insurance from them. It's my adviser's main research project, but it's not formally a university program and nobody is getting credit for it. I was offered a spot if I paid my way, and over the summer I don't think I'll technically be a student (graduated from undergrad in May, accepted to a PhD program that begins in August). I'm essentially a volunteer.

We've used HTH. The cost for two months should be so low that trip interruption won't be a killer.
