Relatively current women rappers?

I'm looking for songs by women rappers. I currently like Kreayshawn, K. Flay, and Angel Haze - Nicki Minaj and MIA also fit, but are a bit more mainstream.

I'm more interested in women who are making music now and who are a bit underground. So, no suggestions for things like Missy Elliot or Lil' Kim. I also really like interesting beats - clapping is something I particularly enjoy. I don't care for R&B or lots of singing.

Best answer: Have you heard of Iggy Azalea? I made a post on her a while back.

tUnE-yArDs - not hip-hop but, uh, listen to it anyway.

Best answer: Azealia Banks is pretty sweet. She describes herself as "witch-hop," which I find pretty hilarious.

Northern State has a Beastie Boys thing going on.

Lady Sovereign, though she's currently on "hiatus" with plans to release new material "when the time is right". But she's got plenty of stuff from 2005-2009 or so, if that's current enough for you.

You might also like Speech Debelle, though she's a little bit less Nicki Minaj and a little bit more Tracy Chapman. Still definitely rap.

Best answer: You might like Jean Grae.

ditto Jean Grae and Azealia Banks
adding the not particularly current and predictably nearly-impossible-to-google Jane Doe. You may know her from her smoking guest spot on this song from the Black Star album.

She has an unreleased album called "The Introduction" not listed on discogs...some samples on youtube: 1, 2, 3. A torrent of the album is available but I'll refrain from linking it in the interests of not getting this answer deleted.

Bahamadia. I don't think she's done much recently, but I love her.

Just saw this amazing video on Tumblr: Trill Lolita - Itzel Xoco

And that reminds me there's Brooke Candy aka the pink haired gal in the metal suit in Grimes' Genesis music video.

Lady - Twerk and Yankin. (mefi post)

Lil Debbie (who is a member of White Girl Mob with Kreayshawn & V-Nasty), Brooke Candy maybe?

Oh and yeah, doubledown on Azealia Banks being one of the the best any-gender rappers around right now.

Best answer: The artists on my current 'female mc' playlist, unless they've been mentioned already (like Jean Grae, the goddamned queen--seriously, check out Keep Livin'):

Rocky Rivera, a West-Coast artist. (Also try this one.)

Reema Major

Almost everyone here, including Lioness, Lady Leshurr, Mz Bratt, and Amplify Dot.

Kalae All Day.

Psalm One.

Shystie.

Rapsody.

Miz Korona.

Ruby Ibarra, also here cyphering.

Gavlyn.

She has very sadly passed on recently, but if you want some NOLA rap in your play list, at least add this track from Magnolia Shorty

Response by poster: I have been incredibly busy soaking up all this new music. I love Brooke Candy, and can't believe I forgot to mention Jean Grae in my post.

I'll update with a link to my spotify playlist sometime soon. Thanks, y'all!

Seconding the Azaelia Banks mentions. Also, for a rapper with a similar name but different style, Iggy Azalea?
posted by bgal81 at 6:27 PM on April 8, 2013

Seconding Ana Tijoux: knowledge of Spanish is not necessary for a seriously good time listening to her albums.
