What kind of insect nest is this?

What kind of insect nest is this? It's in Marinette County, Wisconsin. I'm not 100% certain but I believe it just showed up in the past 7 days.

There were bugs around it but not believed to be wasps.

Bonus if you know if it's inhabitants are harmful to logs and any tips for removal.

I suspect it is a hornet nest.

It sure looks like bald-faced hornet nesting material to me. Nothing coming or going out of that hole?

nthing hornet nest. We had giant football sized one on the house a couple of months ago. The pest control guy said it takes a long time to build, but I swear the hornets built it in a matter of days. Get that thing taken care of ASAP, before they come out on the other side. The wood logs, especially if any of them are rotted, provide easy material for them to chew up and build their home.

I would call in a pest control pro, even though you don't say you saw hornets. The sheer number that lived in our football next was insane - probably a thousand, even though only 3-4 hung out keeping a watch on the outside. They swarmed out in a very angry constant stream of buzzing flying insects. It was Biblical, I tell you. Then the larvae. Oh dear god the disgusting larvae.

Definitely call a pro. You do not want to mess with hornets.

It's not that alarming. I have had 3 bald-faced hornet nests within sight of my house all summer and not been stung once. The frost will soon kill all but the queen(s?) , who will overwinter in leaf litter or maybe in a rotten log. And they will not be chewing their way into your house. Relax. Keep kids away and don't molest them and they should leave you alone. When the frost has done its job and all the hornets are gone or dead, remove the nest. Check out the hornet nursery inside. It's Nature.
