What's an inexpensive tropical getaway for an extended visit?

I am looking for an reasonably inexpensive tropical place to spend 6-8 weeks or so this coming spring. This would be more working sabbatical than full-on vacation. In a perfect world, I'd be able to rent an apartment or villa and be able to do my own shopping, cooking, etc.

My only requirements are out of the US, and not so far off the beaten path that I can't get somewhat regular internet access. A nice beach is definitely a major selling point.

Sidenote: My plan B is Roatan. Which is awesome, but I've been already, and am looking for someplace new. Been doing lots of research, but figured I'd see if anyone here might suggest a place I hadn't heard or thought of.

Have you looked at Dominica? It's like a trip back in time.

Bocas Del Toro, Panama. Reliable Internet, groceries, currency and transport. Idyllic beaches.

I have vacationed on Grenada, and have always wanted to spend a couple of months there in the way you describe.

If you're willing to go further afield, Bali is fantastic. Good beaches, great culture, amazing people, wonderful food. I'm preety sure there's a decent amount of longstay accommodation to be had. It can be very inexpensive if you stay away from the luxury stuff.

Response by poster: Just to follow up, my final destination was Siargao Island in the Phillipines. Amazing place, highly recommended, fit my criteria perfectly.
