A Box, Shipping, and Me

This is probably a really easy question, but I can't seem to find the answer. It involves shipping, and paying for said shipping, but not being in the place where things are being shipped from.
So, a friend of mine would like to send me some old computer parts of his. Problem being, he can't afford to ship them to me. I would be perfectly happy to pay for the shipping. However, since we are on opposite ends of the east coast, I can't figure out how to pay for the package to be shipped.
So what do I need to do to pay for shipping for him, and get that box of parts sent to me?
Ideally I'd like to ship it via something other than USPS, but I'd be willing to do that too, if I had to.
Any ideas, hivemind?

Can you just send him a check or cash? Takes a couple days?

In that case can you print the label yourself and send him a copy in the mail? Then all he has to do is to get the box over to the carrier in one of several easy ways (including a free home pickup).

Best answer: When I needed a letter ASAP, I fedexed an envelope with a prepaid fedex return label and an envelope in the package. Worked great.

Then email the label to him so he can print it. If that's not possible for him, print out the label yourself and mail it to him. Then all he has to do is package the parts, stick the label on there and hand it to the nearest UPS/Fedex truck/pick up location/drop box.
