How do I help a family member find an Albany-area psychologist and a marriage counselor?

A family member (late thirties, married, father of two young children,) is having a crisis – both personal and marital. He needs to find a therapist in short order. He lives in Albany, but the surrounding suburbs are accessible. Also, he and his wife have agreed to work with a professional marriage counselor, who should be a different therapist. I have asked my own therapist for recommendations, but I am not anywhere near Albany. Any personal references would be great, but all suggestions as to where to start looking would be appreciated.

Does the company he works for have an employee assistance program? If so, he might want to try that...that's how I found my therapist. (It was actually through my mom's work. I called, had a few sessions with the counselor and then she referred me to my therapist.)

I've visited a variety of shrinks of various stripes in the Albany area but, alas, none whom I could in good conscience recommend. Good luck to him.

Try the Therapist Finder on aamft.org (American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists). To be listed you must be a member of AAMFT which requires many years and lots of experience. If you can't find what you are looking for there try the state association, NYAMFT - they have a web site and possibly a phone contact.

I have also been to numerous psychiatrists and psychologists in the Albany area, and likewise I could not recommend a single one of them. There seems to be a bit of a dearth of quality mental care available there.
