What is the name of an old rambling song?

What is the name of the older (1970's?) song where a hippy-type chap sings. The words are like a rambling story with comments on the state of the world and its indulgences something like; "To do, half past 2, clock tick, time you, fast food, food fast, open for business, convineance, emmeniance, de-grease, de-gas" kind of deal?
Not the right time period, but this reminds me of Billy Joel - We Didn't Start the Fire. (And of course, REM - It's the End of the World as We Know It.)

Step Right Up (1977 performance, lyrics) by Tom Waits? Probably not, but you should know it anyway.

Any chance it's Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan? That was 1965.

Ahh brilliant! Tom Waits! That's the bastard! Thankyou so much evariste!
To the others saying subterranean by bob dylan, it wasn't that but I think in my head I probably got a little mixed up in my original "lyric" interpretation of the song!
Man I love that song so much, thank you all of you guys!:D
