Canadian Prepaid Phones

What's the cheapest prepaid cell phone I can get in Canada and how can I set it up without a computer?
Heading for the Canadian Rockies wilderness with no phone or internet service. However, there will be some possible day trips to Banff, Jasper and other areas where I'd like to have a prepaid phone available to make some calls to the U.S. If possible, I'd like to have a phone number set up before we leave the U.S. I'm going straight from the airport to wilderness areas via a bus and won't have a car rental to hit 7-ll or Petro gas stations to buy a cheap phone there. However, I have a friend currently travelling in Canada who could pick up a phone and get it to me before I leave on my trip.
So should I have this friend pick up a cheap phone and phone card? If so, where should she go to buy one? If she does get me a phone, do you know if I would be able to set the thing up in the U.S. or at the Montreal airport where I change planes?

(There is a Petro-Canada but it looks straight out of the 70s and if it sells anything more than Castrol it's probably gum and Hot Rods.

What furtive said ... an if you do decide to go with a prepaid ... make sure it will work in the area you will be visiting ... a prepaid phone bought in Montreal likely won't work in Alberta. Cheapest phone will be in $50 range, with long distance calls to the U.S. costing around 75cents a minute.
Really ... get the calling card.
