Help me find the world's greatest bath robe.

I was never a robe guy until we spent a weekend in a very nice hotel for an out of town wedding. They had very possibly the world's greatest turndown service that included the world's greatest milk, the world's greatest cookies, and, most importantly, the world's greatest robe. I want my own.

The way I see it is that this robe should last a few years, so I'm find with spending up to about $100. Ideally I would like to spend less, but if it really is the world's greatest robe, I'm willing to pay more.

I'm a big guy - 6'2" about 265. I assume that matters.

I've seen this, but I assume the robe industry has changed radically in five years.

Well, one easy thing to do would be to call the hotel and ask what kind of robes they have. Then you could just get that one.

Seconding call the hotel. They LOVE to sell their robes. (Don't worry, they'll send you a nice new one.)

Response by poster: Eh, I think it would be weird to wear a robe branded with a bunch of hotel logos. No?

No.

This robe is supposed to be very nice, and they even sell some to hotels (as well as to consumers). Who knows, this may even be the same robe as the one your hotel had.

I bought this robe for my sweetie, who let me try it once (just once). It is like wearing an incredibly soft, thick, heavy towel, and after a shower wearing it felt like being ensconced in luxury. No logos to worry about, I think.

What are you looking for in a robe? Plush and cozy? (Slightly) Absorbent for after showers? Soft and/or silky? I have one light-weight robe I enjoy as an alternative to clothes around home (but that I would not classify as the World's Greatest Robe), and my wife has one that is so very soft and cozy. But insulates me too well, so I get warm too fast in it (unless it's a cold morning, then it's possibly the World's Greatest Robe).

(And the cozy, fuzzy robe is not good at absorbing moisture, or I wouldn't get sweaty in the damned plush monster of comfort.)

No, not weird. Hotel robes are pretty common hotel-gift-shop items (think landmark hotels which actually do have a gift shop with hotel-branded knick-knackery) and you are not the first person to think "Hey, this's nice, I want it," and they will be used to selling them. (My own hotel-logo'ed robe is from "Guest Supply"; it is unusually thick and, unsurprisingly, very durable -- washes beautifully.)

Not at all. And not for either gender. Most hotels now sell their robes; they are so popular, guests steal them if they do not. A good robe is like true love: you take it where you find it. I have two from hotels, one from a hospital, one I stole from my sister and one I stole from my own husband.( He's ever getting it back, in fact, because perfect robes may actually be more rare than love.)

Even though everyone else insists that its totally ok to wear a robe a hotel logo on it, I still think I'd rather not. Looking back, I should have made it clear that the reason the hotel robe was so fantastic was some combination of the following: First, I had never really worn a robe before. Its a little weird to lounge around naked in a buddy's robe and I had never been in a hotel that had robes. Second, pre-robing activities included a long night of drinking.

While this particular robe was pretty nice, I might have used a mild hyperbole when describing it.

Not robes, but much more practical: medical scrubs. Srsly.

Best answer: Hotel robe sold by Marriott (just as evidence that lots of people want hotel bathrobes). Definitely not weird to ask the hotel you stayed at about the brand... the company that makes it might sell them without the hotel logos embroidered on there. If you do really like the specific robes from your hotel and can buy one from them, I think embroidery is easy to snip out of terrycloth.

Based on my experience with their towels, I'm sure these bathrobes from Restoration Hardware would be wonderful. Cheaper versions at Land's End probably very good.

I bought a Restoration Hardware terry robe about 5 years ago, and I love it. It's definitely the thickest terry robe I've ever worn. It is very roomy and kind of heavy - I just wear it after my shower before I get dressed - not sure that I'd love lounging in it.

Seconding LL Bean if you need super large sizes.

My husband bought me the Restoration Hardware Spa Robe a few years ago and it is very heavy. Wonderful to wear after a shower in winter but much too heavy for North Carolina summers. The outside is silky and the inside is a plush terrycloth. For summer I prefer my heavy silk damask robe but I bought it so long ago I don't remember where it came from.

My husband had never worn robes either until I bought him a terrycloth robe from Nordstrom's. It is mid-calf length and solid black. I just happened to catch a good sale because I believe it was originally $200 but I got it for around $50. At the moment they have a waffle knit robe for $55 and a terry velour for $80.
