My coat needs a new lining.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good tailor or seamstress in the Hamilton/Burlington area?

I found a really cute cotton trench coat at one of those discount label stores today. I looked it over pretty carefully before I bought it and noticed that the polyester lining inside was cut along the edges. I thought it was something I could fix, but when I got it home I realized that there are actually just big pieces of the lining missing. This is beyond my sewing skill level. Is replacing the whole lining an easy job for one of those U-hem places, or should I take it to a tailor or a dressmaker, maybe? Hamilton or Burlington is preferred, as I am dependent on public transit. Thanks!

I can't recommend anybody, but replacing the entire lining is a big job. Depending on how much of a discount you got on the coat, the odds are pretty good that you'll be charged more than you paid for the coat.

If you really love the coat, it may be worth it to phone around for a couple of estimates and compare the prices.

Depending on how and where the lining is cut and missing, you might be better just patching in similar (or contrasting) lining pieces.

Dry cleaners can often do wonders in terms of alterations, very cheaply.

I live in the same area, and have had difficulties finding a full fledged tailor - the trade seems to have died out a LOT in the area.

I have had minor alterations and repairs done, very nicely, at my local dry cleaners.

Stop and Clean Dry Cleaners at Dundurn and Aberdeen.

I will be keeping an eye on this thread, because I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else knows a good tailor!!

Response by poster: Yeah, I think I might just end up calling around. It just needs a new inside panel (no sleeves or anything) but I think it would still be considered bigger than just an "alteration."

smitt, if I have success finding someone I will be sure to let you know!
