Looking for resources on Cape Verdean creole.

As of late, I've been spending a decent amount of time in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. For whatever reason, Pawtucket has a significant Cape Verdean population. The Cape Verdean folks I've met are pretty cool. I'd like to learn the basics of their language, and I have a feeling that just studying Portuguese isn't going to cut it. Any suggestions?

I'm sure there should be some English language materials available for learning Crioulo. It used to be taught in the 1980s at Boston University (but no longer), so you could try calling the Boston University African Studies Center or the Geddes Language Center (which would keep archives of the audio and printed materials used in the courses.)

Closer to Pawtucket, check the Portuguese departments at local colleges. A lot may teach Cape Verdean creole. It is surprisingly easy to learn if you are living near a lot of speakers.

Have you tried asking your friends? They might be able to point you in the right direction. Other northeastern cities with established cv populations include new Bedford, MA and Bridgeport, CT. I think both those areas may have cultural centers which could help you out.

Shopcaboverdeonline.com has some texts, too. Good luck!
