NameThatNovel: NYC, A Messiah, Elvis Costello? I looked through http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/index.php/References_in_Movies,_TV,_Books,_etc. but no luck! Read the book in 1994-96. Plot, as remembered, involves New York, a young (black?) gutterpunk messiah, maybe an anglo female lead, and the music of Elvis Costello. Literary, not pulpy. I don't think it's "The Story of My Life", but I could be wrong.

Are you sure it was NYC? Could it have been LA, and Bret Easton Ellis, and Less Than Zero? There were lots of drugs but I don't remember a messiah...
