ISO Backgammon software

Searching for a free computer version of BACKGAMMON.

I went through the MeFi search and found tons of great secondary info -- short of a program to download. Google vexes me here; all it seems to turn up are a bazillion commercial versions and a handful of "works-in-progress". What do Backgammon fans use? (Much like Chess fans use Xboard, Winboard, Arena, etc. plus 3rd party engines. Anything like that for backgammon?)

Also looking for a good "Mille Bourne" or "UNO" type programs.

(Using Windows 7)

Jellyfish is ancient, but decent freeware.

The best.

Seconding GNU Backgammon. The AI is very strong, and the analysis/tutor mode is great.

Best answer: BG Blitz is first class. In fact it's frequently been the AI world champ, defeating GNU Backgammon in the 2007 Olympiad. I think the free download has most features, but it's well worth the $23 for the full "player" version.

Can I piggyback on this and ask about android versions? I really liked my Agushka Backgammon for PalmOS but now I've switched to an android phone and can't find anything good. Maybe I'll try the above suggestions using the android browser.

If you are open to playing against other people instead of the computer (and have an internet connection), both itsyourturn.com and yourturnmyturn.com host backgammon games and tournaments. IYT even has ladders and some variations. Both are free for limited play but you can upgrade to a paid membership if you want more playing time. Along the same lines, you can play UNO on Facebook. I'd imagine there are FB apps to play backgammon as well.

There is a version of Mille Bornes on some of the Hoyle Card Games CDs and there looks to be a version set in space on the 2011 release. (19.99 to download)

Response by poster: I had played an early version of GNU Backgammon that was so bad that I didn't even think to try it again. Boy, was I wrong! It plays a wicked game.
