Can you name this movie for me?

Can you name this movie for me? The film is a romantic drama (or comedy?) where the basic premise was a boy and a girl who were friends and sort of are meant to be together but travel along their own paths for a while until, presumably, the end when they end up happily together.
The catch: I've only seen the trailer.
I remember from the trailer that they had an object that they'd sort of trade to each other. I think it was sort of a Count of Monte Cristo-ish deal where whoever was "winning" or "king of the moment" would get possession of a can of sorts. Maybe the can had memories and photos in it from their friendship?
I recall a scene in the trailer where the guy is getting married, and the girl rolls the can down the aisle to sort of remind him that there's more to the world and maybe he's making a mistake?
It's entirely possible that I am making this up, but with so few details it's been incredibly hard to Google and it's been nagging me for a while.
If I had to guess, I'd say the movie is from somewhere around 1994-2005.
