The Vagaries of Dental Insurance

What a couple to do for dental coverage?

Our Cobra coverage ran out last week and we're paying a very high premium for Blue Cross while we wait for Medicaid to review our application. (I have a pre-existing condition and Blue Cross is the only plan that would take me). The very first day we lost dental coverage my molar cracked and now I need a root canal. We'll pay out-of-pocket because all the plans we found have a 6-12 month waiting period for things like root canals. Should we go ahead and sign-up for private dental or take our chances until something more affordable comes along or has anyone found a better way? We keep hearing about county-run plans but so far we've been unable to reach real people to find out about them.

Best answer: Rather than getting dental insurance short term until your Medicaid is approved, why not call around to dentists in your area and ask for their cash prices and if they have payment plans. One of my good friends is a dentist and his rates are drastically less than if it has to be processed through insurance, by as much as 60%.

Best answer: For cheaper options, do you have a dental school nearby that has an emergency clinic or just a normal clinic? I've had a root canal done by my dentist at the dental school here and it was about 60% cheaper than the other dentists I asked.
