Children's picture book with non-linear narrative?

I once encountered a children's picture book, in which there were 4 pictures per page. Some of the pictures tightly related to the text on that page, but others did not make a lot of sense until later pages of the story. The narrative was thus a bit non-liner and ambiguous, with the idea that children would enjoy pointing out connections that are not immediately obvious. I believe that there is a train in the story. Unfortunately I cannot remember the title of the book or the author. Does this ring a bell to anyone??

Was it David Wiesner's Black and White, by any chance?

Totally random, but could it be The Mysteries of Harris Burdick? There is kind of a train-thing on the cover, plus Chris Van Allsburg also wrote The Polar Express, which looked very similar and was about a train.

Yeah, definitely Black and White (though it's by David Macaulay, not David Wiesner).
