What should we do for Halloween in DC?

My wife and two friends are going to DC for the daily show rally. Would love to do something for halloween that night (the30th) in costume. Not looking for some $50 event. Do they shut down the street anywhere or is there somewhere you can easily hope from bar to bar and people watch? Used tou events in Orlando when they shut down church street or Boston where you can jump from bar to bar with low cover or for free.

Staying in Capitol area but can metro or car.

Best answer: The houses along East Capitol Street (around the 600 block) put up some impressive displays that attract large groups. The street isn't shut down, but a lot of people drive in from outside the neighborhood so traffic is barely moving anyway. From there you can walk to the bars on Pennsylvania Avenue (around the 300 block southeast) and/or Barrack Row (8th St SE south of Penn).

However, I read somewhere that trick or treating is still happening on the 31st. So I'm not sure if the scene on East Capitol will provide the full Halloween experience on the 30th.

Best answer: They shut down the main drag in Georgetown, but it's so freaking crowded that you can't really jump from bar to bar.

If you do East Capitol Street, you might as well make your way over to Walter Street. It's a little one-block street that hosts hundreds of kids. I've been to a couple of Halloween parties there; maybe not worth a special trip, but if you're in the neighborhood, it'd be a fun thing to do.

Seconding Georgetown. It is a wild experience on Halloween.

My best DC Halloween was an early dinner at Blackie's House of Beef (now closed) and drinks at Brickskeller (on the edge of Dupont Circle). BS got the before-Georgetown elaborate costume crowd, so the people watching was great.
