Doctor Who style

Help me dress like Doctor Who! Not as a costume; I just really like his style...

I love the Eleventh Doctor's standard outfit. I'm trying to emulate his style, which to me is more university professor than preppy dandy. I like suspenders and bowties, but I want to avoid the 80s, Gordon Gekko throwback (so, no two-toned shirts + red anything?).

I'm aiming for neutrals/earth tones & lots of tweed and corduroy...any other tips? I'm already scouring thrift stores, but are there any suggestions for online sites to check out? (I can't seem to find a reasonably priced tweed jacket anywhere...)

It's costume-y. It's contrived. I don't care. I appreciate any help!

Best answer: I know you're not looking for a costume, but there's a lot of information here that could get you closer.

His shoes ("monkey boots") are a key part of his look. He's not wearing sneakers or even converse.

If you want some, you can find them at AllSaints. That whole store is good for the style you're looking for, though rather expensive. Maybe it can give you some ideas.

J. Peterman is not reasonably priced, but join their email list and keep an eye on their sales and you can sometimes score something really nice.

Just popping by to say, I know a twenty year-old guy who dresses like this quite often, and it doesn't look odd on him at all; in fact, it rather suits him and we all react oddly now if we see him wearing something else more "normal" (like plaid shorts, ugh.) So you definitely can pull it off.

I would think thrift stores would be your best bet, but I wanted to also say that if you don't want to shell out for monkey boots, certain years of combat boots have the same general toe shape (that's what I thought the Doctor's were at first) and can be found at consignment stores quite cheaply. Also, go for shirts with really subtle patterns on them.

Best answer: My tip when trying to adopt a new fashion direction is to do it one step at a time rather than stepping out in a whole new outfit.

Otherwise you risk feeling like you're in costume, which will make you self-conscious. Get the tweed jacket this week, get the corduroy trousers in a couple of weeks, treat yourself to the bowtie in a month or so...

my recommendation for acquiring said items: small online vintage emporiums like this one (admittedly geared towards women but with the odd excellent find for the boys) - they often link together to improve business so look for the vintage/second hand communities online.
