I need songs to be happily sad to, please. Or sadly happy, if you prefer.

Please help me build a playlist around a strangely narrow thematic framework: I need music suitable for bittersweet, fond farewells.

There's a certain kind of song I need to hear a bunch of right now, but the defining characteristics of such songs aren't really of the kind one can plug in to Pandora. Basically, I'm looking for music suitable for times when circumstances have forced apart people who were very fond of each other, remain very fond of each other, and who miss each other badly but are grateful to have had made a connection that leaves them missing someone. Songs for parting without a hint of acrimony or resentment. Farewell songs that are a happy strain of sad. It would be nice if they had a gentle sound to them, but this is not an ironclad requirement.

Circumstances in play long before we came together have recently separated my darlin and I, you see. We knew it was coming all along and knew that what we had, sweet as it was, would be temporary. It's been a bad feeling mixed in with a good feeling ever since she left - I'm sad to see her go of course but so, so happy to have had the chance to know her so well. We're gonna get some visits together down the road, but for now we're gonna have to miss each other for awhile.

All I want to do for the moment is listen to a bunch of music that suits the blue-but-not-negative humour we parted in and think about all the amazing times we had. This Shivaree song is an almost perfect example of what I've got in mind, but I've been listening to it a hell of a lot and could do with some fresh tunes. Could you please recommend a few? You're a daisy if you do.

I think the best known song of this type is "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton. Covered by many, most notably Whitney Houston and Melissa Etheridge.

Well, not exactly gentle, but Tom Waits' 'Lucky Day' might fit the bill.

leaving on a jet plane by peter paul and mary?

And...I must go by late tuesday, lyrics below:

Time flies when you’re having fun
And it’s flown too quickly for me
For my time has arrived
The day has come, the day I must leave
Where I’ll go I cannot barely know
All I see is the road at my feet

I must go, I must leave this place
I have somewhere to go
I have a new road to follow
I must go, and though I wish I could stay
There is something beyond what I see
I must go

And though I feel like I’m losing myself as I fear leaving all this behind me
I will not, I will not lose my faith as I go
For my fears will be vanished in time
And I know that I will be fine

I must go, I must leave this place
I have somewhere to go
I have a new road to follow
I must go, and though I wish I could stay
There is something beyond what I see
I must go

And I will not forget you, I could not forget you
Even though I cannot be by yourside
But life’s course has brought us to this place, tomorrow we must embrace
And seek joy in this bittersweet goodbye

"Talkin' to Myself About You" by Peggy Lee
"Things You Call Fate" by the incomparable Sondre Lerche
"Fallen" by Elvis Costello from his album North, and actually that whole album might work for you.

Happy trails to you, until we meet again.

A gentler version of Auld Lang Syne.

The End.

Kind and Generous.

In the Aeroplane over the Sea (a bit rockier, but joyful view of life and loss)

My choices veer on the indie - I recently had a friend pass away and these two songs really resonated with me:

Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap (lyrics). You might have heard this from 500 Days of Summer.

In the Sun by Joseph Arthur (lyrics).

A couple of Elton John songs with lovely lyrics that might hit the mood you're looking for:

Blue Eyes

Blue eyes baby´s got blue eyes
Like a deep blue sea
On a blue blue day
Blue eyes, baby´s got blue eyes
When the morning comes
I´ll be far away
And I say

Blue eyes holding back the tears
Holding back the pain
Baby´s got blue eyes
And she´s alone again

Blue eyes baby´s got blue eyes
Like a clear blue sky
Watching over me
Blue eyes ooh I love blue eyes
When I´m by her side
Where I long to be
I will see

Blue eyes laughing in the sun
Laughing in the rain
Baby´s got blue eyes
And I am home
And I am home again

Blue eyes laughing in the sun
Laughing in the rain
Baby´s got blue eyes
And I am home again

Your Song

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

googly: "Autumn Leaves."

Try Eva Cassidy's version. Leaves me gasping for air. Awesome.

My own contribution: "I'll be here in the morning", Townes Van Zandt. The lyrical content isn't exactly right, but the mood is.

This is one of my favorite kinds of song! My favorite bittersweet farewell tune ever is Big Star's Take Care, but also be sure to listen to Yo La Tengo's gorgeous cover.

Another song that fits your description almost perfectly is Edith Frost's "You're Decided"—sorry, not on youtube, but you can find it on her album Wonder Wonder.

Some other ideas:

- Marissa Nadler, Diamond Heart
- Silver Jews, Pretty Eyes
- Galaxie 500, Tugboat

I have the perfect song for you: You and I Both by Jason Mraz. It’s a sweet, happy tune that focuses on the good times.

But often times those words get tangled up in lines
And the bright lights turn to night
Until the dawn it brings
A little bird who'll sing about the magic
that was you and me

Also:
Whenever You Call – Mariah Carey
I won't ever be too far away to feel you
And I won't hesitate at all
Whenever you call
And I'll always remember
The part of you so tender
I'll be the one to catch your fall
Whenever you call

Run – Snow Patrol (but I prefer Leona Lewis’s take on it)
To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

I see your Pokemon and raise you "Only a Memory Away" from Sailor Moon.

They're on the perky side but I think you would like Reina's "If I Close My Eyes" and Da Buzz's "Cause I Need Your Love." Also "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" by The Moody Blues.

How about Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce?

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till Eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you
Time in a Bottle, Greatest Love Songs, by Jim Croce

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you
Classic Hits, by Jim Croce

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with
