Help Me Name My Band's Music!
March 26, 2010 12:05 PM
Let's name a music that has never existed before.
It's like Celtic Punk, but instead of being rooted in punk rock, it's rooted in American (and, for the matter, Irish) garage rock from the 60s. What would we call such a style of music that would be memorable?
This isn't a hypothetical. I need to figure out what to call the music my band makes.

Celt Rock.
I like the definition of Celt: If you describe someone as a Celt, you mean that they are part of the racial group which comes from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and some other areas such as Brittany.

Erm. When I first read the definition, I thought it said radical group. So, uh. But... Celt Rock still has a nice ring to it.

Careful, though. Self-naming a musical genre can be risky. You can end up defining yourself into a corner. We've come up with a joke/serious genre for our band that we don't share with the world at large: rapalachicana.

I don't know...Celt Rock makes me think of Thin Lizzy. (Which may not be what you're going for.) Anyone know the Celtic word for "garage"? Is there one?

What do your fans call it? Genre names often arise when someone says "play us some of that ___ music."

Bands don't create genres, listeners and critics do.
Actually, there's a stories tradition of bands self-naming their sound, such as Allison Wolfe naming Riot Grrrl and Earl Palmer defining his music as funk. Pretty sure Eugene Hütz coined Gypsy Punk, too.

well, since I apparently named your sound, can I request that you cover Garageland as "Gaelageland"?

That sounds descriptive enough to me. Let the journalists worry about coming up with a pithy label for your genre-bending sound.
