ISO handcrafted gift(s) in San Francisco.
Have my mind on a small carved wooden box or another small-in-size gift that seems "special." Not looking for jewelry. Any suggestions? I would love recommendations for particular stores if possible as opposed to "try the Haight." Am also looking for an in-person shopping experience as opposed to internet shopping.
(I used to go to a couple of stores in Hayes Valley for this sort of thing, but not sure if that works anymore -- I noticed one of the stores is no longer there.)

Museum gift shops often have nice handcrafted gifts-verging-on-art. Try the de Young, the Asian, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, etc. You can usually go into the gift shop without having to pay museum admission; check at the ticket desk.

I also like Terrasol, which has handcrafted gift items, including Latin American folk art figurines, and Mickey's Monkey, which has unique small items and gifts in addition to the larger furniture pieces.

If you find yourself in the Berkeley, Treehouse is a good place to look.
