What are some online games in the style of Mafia Wars, but not quite so ... social?

I love me some Mafia Wars (the Facebook game). Yeah, I know it's mindless point-and-click interface-with-a-database nonsense, but I love it. The persistent world, the points system which means you have to stop playing after a few minutes (but need to check back in in a few hours), all of that stuff. Silly nonsense, but it's fun. And from a game standpoint, it's pretty well designed (especially now with the Cuba and Moscow expansions).

But I HATE HATE HATE the social aspect of it. I hate seeing Mafia Wars updates from friends, and I hate the fact that other people might see something Mafia Wars pushes out on my behalf. I just want to play the game - I do not want to rely on other people for the game to be satisfying.

So: Are there any games similarly fun, point/clicky, level-uppy, without the unnecessary element of being on a social network?

I had quite a bit of fun with AdventureQuest for a few months a few years ago.

Kingdom of Loathing is a bit more complex (and much better written), but pushes some of the same buttons in terms of game mechanics.

Progress Quest is probably closer in spirit, though.

You could try Kingdom of Loathing.

Farmville on facebook has a similar setup, but way less annoying updates that clog up your page. You run a farm, and have to check it frequently to "harvest" your crops, plant more, collect chicken eggs, etc. I thought it looked dumb until I tried it, and now I'm totally hooked.

You probably already know this, but it's possible to block all Mafia Wars updates from your FB homepage, and it's also possible to stop Mafia Wars from making updates on your behalf (it's in the per-application settings).
