Have you ever dated a Suicide Girl?

I have dated plenty that would qualify. But never one that actually was a "Suicide Girl". At least I don't think any of them are. Maybe I should check.

No, but I did once see an ex show up as a Salon Personal of the Day.

I did a double take, and then KILLED MYSELF.

I know a handful of suicide girls, and they've (with one exception) left a pretty impressive string of broken ex-boyfriends behind.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

I used to live in downtown SW portland. Cross Burnside, and you couldn't walk without tripping over one. I've never dated one, but one cuts my hair. I've never felt a need to join the website, because I can see just about everything I need/want to by glancing in random windows as I drive down NW 19th.

I knew a photographer once who shot a few sessions with a SG, then had sex with her.

But I doubt that counts.

No. Sigh. Are you considering it, or is this just a poll?

"I knew a photographer once who shot a few sessions with a SG, then had sex with her."

I don't really think that counts as "dating," but it does seem like fun.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "suicide girl"?
Maybe it's the obvious, but I dunno....

Yes, I have.

If you are currently doing so, it's already too late.

Without uh, pissing anyone off, what's so special about this porn? Am I missing something here? It seems to me just like a bunch of goth/punk chicks going for the amateur angle. Or is it the fact that everyone treats it kind of sacred the only reason it's not considered real porn? I feel as if I'm missing something.

I know a bunch of them, and a few on Fatal Beauty as well.

Gone out with and photographed, but not seriously dated.

Geoff: I'll take a go at your answer: (1) the women are young; and (2) appeal to a younger demographic than typical pr0n(?). Also, that site seems to offer a lot for free? Also, ongoing references on Metafilter?
posted by ParisParamus at 3:19 PM on December 28, 2004

Geoff, the whole point is that it was sort of the first online softcore porn that had "alternative" girls. So there are no airbrushes and plenty of tattoos and peircings and whatnot. But when the site came out they looked nothing like any porn seen before and carved out a niche that served them well.

I had a brief but enjoyable fling a year or so ago... however, I think the experience might be overrated.

Er, no. I dated actual Goth women, bafore Bauhaus officially broke up.

right. you answered your own question. People into punk/goth chicks going for an amateur angle like it.

as to the question, mightn't it depend on the girl?

"...the whole point is that it was sort of the first online softcore porn that had "alternative" girls. So there are no airbrushes and plenty of tattoos and peircings and whatnot..."

In my experience, tattoos and piercings aren't "alternative", they're "trashy". At least that's what it was back before the Seventies was looked back upon as nostalgia.

So I guess to answer the question, yeah, I dated "Suicide Girls" back when they were just plain old white trash.

Crash: Aaah, but these are urban, hip, indy rock white trash girls.

In my experience, tattoos and piercings are not a strong indicator of who a person is. At least that's what it was back before I turned old and judgemental.

I put alternative in quotes for a reason.

Wow, after reading the title on my rss feed I had a whole different response ready.

And the answer now is "No", because the idea of november/may romance is not my thing.

On preview: in my experience, tattoos and piercings were an indicator of a person's desire to be "alternative." But, I'm old and back then CEOs and PTA presidents weren't doing it.

So assuming they aren't zombies, why are they called "suicide" girls?
posted by 4easypayments at 5:13 PM on December 28, 2004

Yes. And she was lovely. Ended amicably and well, and she certainly didn't have a "string of exes" behind her, not as if that matters, anyway.

Okay. I was all set to dispense advice on dating women who are suicidal. But instead we're just talking about women who get tatooed and pierced and then pose for pictures naked? Do they at least do a lot of drugs while they're at it? I mean... do they do anything at all to earn their title?
posted by Clay201 at 7:07 PM on December 28, 2004

Used to know a suicide girl. She was very smart, but too messed up by all the coke and booze to hold down a normal job. She seemed trapped in a cycle of drugs, sex, and depression, though I don't know if she felt trapped.

It definitely is porn, but it's interesting the form it takes. It's porn with the notion that these girls have some sort of connection with the site's target audience: the girls frequently have indie taste in music and film, they're frequently in or graduated from college, and they have their own blogs. Part of the fantasy for the site's users is that not only can you see their b00bies, but they have cool record collections and could maybe talk to you about Hannah Arendt. Also, having the "hip" ads on places like Pitchfork or the somewhat artsily presented coffee table book for sale in independent bookstores (who'd keep that thing on a coffee table?), in addition to having a running blog with indie rock news and suchlike, helps create this illusion that it's not porn. Or, that if it is porn, it's at least somewhat vaguely cool porn.

It's really a very interesting idea, marketingwise. A very '00s variation on the "chicks in bikinis shooting guns" sort of niche entertainment, or those biker magazines with babes leaning on Harleys - "look! these things you like! AND A SEXY LADY! imagine if both you and the sexy lady were fucking and talking about these things you like!!!!!"

All with the added wrinkle that they're blogging. Why, it's almost as if you're hanging out with them...

(Note: despite my affection for both sexy ladies and indie rock, I'm not into the whole SG thing. I just find it a cannily interesting phenomenon.)

To me, the interesting part of this post is how many members who have read AskMe in the past 18 hours were able to answer some form of "yes" to this question. Internet communities are obviously self-selecting, so it's not a surprise that the magnitude of the overlap would be more than random/coincidental, but I'm nevertheless staggered.

I'm married to one and I am happy as Larry. Just because she fits the look of a Suicide Girl doesn't make her a crackwhore. They are the same as any "alternative" group of people. Some of the comments above are quite depressing, Danelope seems to be correct though.

Also - I went to see the SG Burlesque show - which had many nipple pasties and hula-hoops which was ace. Spoke to the girls afterwards and they are normal sane members of society - they just don't wear Abercrombie and Fitch.

I'm staggered like blueshammer: there are 400-something SGs and five Mefites who've visited AskMe in the last 24 hours have dated/married at least one? Internet... shrinking... can't... breathe...

I met one at a funeral last spring. She didn't leave a good impression on me. She wasn't young either, she was well into her 40s. She bragged about how her daughter is also a SG. Just kinda gave me the creepies.
posted by Juicylicious at 12:14 PM on December 29, 2004

I kind of doubt your funeral friend was an actual Suicide Girl, Juicylicious - "well into her 40s" is considerably beyond their demographic. (Tho the concept of a spinoff "Suicide MILFs" community is kind of intriguing ... )

hang on - I see a bit of a disconnect here - are those people that are saying "Yes", saying that they have actually married, dated, met, screwed and photographed one of the girls from SuicideGirls.com, or ar they saying (as I think some of them are) I once dated a girl with tattoos and piercing, she is a 'generic' suicide girl?
