Why does opening PNGs from JungleDisk kill Photoshop?

If I'm in Photoshop and try to open a PNG file from JungleDisk, why does Photoshop freeze indefinitely?

This doesn't happen with any other file type, just PNGs. It only happens when I'm opening directly from JungleDisk. If I move them to my local drive, they open fine. I have asked on the JungleDisk forums, but no responses. Thanks for any insights you've got!

They ended the Jungledisk forums about 4 weeks ago, so that's probably why no responses. They moved to a support ticket system. Maybe submit a support ticket question? I use JungleDisk but I don't have Photoshop to test your problem here.

What OS?

Jungle Disk just connects to the Amazon S3 service with your AWS account. Perhaps try another JungleDisk-compatible AWS S3 client to access your PNG file — a different client (example) may handle the decoding properly.

I just tested this in Photoshop CS2 with a 73kb PNG. No problem opening it over JungleDisk.

If you do have a problem, my guess would be that Photoshop is trying to do something clever in the image before opening it; seeking into the middle to read the size or something. Does Photoshop have a "don't preview before opening" option or the like?

How large are these PNG files?

Response by poster: Thanks guys. More details: I'm using OSX 10.5.6 and the PNGs are fairly small, between 12-50KB. I could try another client, but I do everything via Photoshop. Also, I tried this on a Macbook, and the same thing happened, Photoshop just froze indefinitely.

Ah, my test was on Windows. That won't help you at all, sorry.

Does Photoshop connect directly to JungleDisk?

I suggest trying a different client to:

1. Upload a known, working PNG file through CyberDuck or another S3 client ("control")
2. Upload a known, working PNG file through Jungle Disk ("treatment")
3. Download your "control" PNG file with Jungle Disk, open in Photoshop (test A1)
4. Download your "control" PNG file with another client, open in Photoshop (test A2)
5. Download your "treatment" PNG file with Jungle Disk, open in Photoshop (test B1)
6. Download your "treatment" PNG file with another client, open in Photoshop (test B2)

From these tests you can figure out whether the problem is with uploading, downloading, or with Photoshop.
