Need inexpensive lodging in Kailua Hawaii
January 8, 2009 8:44 AM

My wife needs to stay in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii for a period while her mom is having surgery. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced (ie. non resort) place she can stay for a week or two? The tourist hotel rates are just too much for us.

An extended stay type hotel, with kitchen etc, would be nice.

Thanks!

How about Patey's Place? It's a hostel, but don't let that scare you. She can get a private room for $65, or a shared room for $25 if feeling adventurous. TripAdvisor gives it great ratings. It has a kitchen. Plus, if she's staying for an extended time period, they may be more willing to work out a deal.

Sorry, my first link should have been this.

I have been in a similar situation in Puerto Rico. After telling the front desk folks my plight and giving them a local address, they suddenly came back with the local rates. Rates significantly lower and the hotel was pretty full up with tourists.

Try calling the hotels directly, not the 800 reservation line and telling them your plight. Give your mom's addy.

Have you looked at the rentals on vrbo.com?

Depending on what type of illness your mother-in-law has, your wife may be eligible for discounts. For example, the American Cancer Society helps families of those with cancer in just those types of situations. Many other types of organizations do as well.

Similarly, some hospitals work out discount patient/caretaker rates with local hotels (as I found out when I went to Scottsdale last year when my dad had surgery). See if the hospital where your mother-in-law will be having surgery has a list of recommended places to stay.

There are a ton of vacation rentals in Kailua. Most are converted garages and such with mini-kitchens and separate entrances. Much more privacy than a B&B or hostel. Rates seem to start at $65/day (plus tax). Google "kailua vacation rental" or "kailua vacation cottage." Here are a couple to get you started (both pulled from Kailua Vacation Rentals) ...

Aargh. Here's that third link again: Affordable Paradise. And, again, you'll need to select the island and the price to see the listings for Kailua.

Also, for what it's worth, hotels here are experiencing occupancy rates far lower than the norm, so rates are a lot more flexible than in years (hell, months) past.

Just a quick question; if your mother-in-law is going to be in the hospital, why can't your wife stay at her place while this is happening?

Motown... mother in law is in a 1 bedroom apt, with husband, and... let's just say my wife wants to stay sane.
