Period Piece Movie Help

I'm looking for a movie from my childhood. It was most likely released in the late 80's / early 90's, and is a period piece taking place in turn of the century Europe. There fairies or magic of some fashion, a crystal ball figures into it, perhaps, and maybe a locket. My most vivid images of it are: someone falls through an ice sheet early on, and at the end the lead is hanged, but he wants death because he misses his love. That's about it.

yup this is the one.
five minutes into it his wife falls through an ice crevice on their honeymoon and disappears, he treasures a pocketwatch she gave him as a present. later on he starts eating hallucinogenic flowers and seeing fairies everywhere, then he kills ben kinglsey for burning his stuff. they execute him while playing some sort of requiem by somebody. then it cuts to switzerland with his wife high-fiving lacrosse players.
