Stock sound archive?

Stock sound? Is there a place on the internets where one can download freely or purchase sound samples- not CD collections. Like if I want thunder, or trains, or some other cheesy stuff.

Soundsnap.com has been good to me. Free, user-submitted sounds in a great variety of categories.

Here's one of my oldest bookmarks, they have a collection of sound clips.

iStockphoto.com will soon be launching its audio section. Might not help you with your current project, but check it out once it launches. Lots of interesting stuff will be available.

Freesound, indeed. I used a bunch of samples from there on my album, including some great rain and thunder sounds.

Freesound is great, but I stumbled on this one years ago. It has become the only site I even bother with for theatre sound design and effect work. Not free, but outrageously comprehensive. Effects and music.
