How do I exit my deal with Edward Jones?

I understand all the math and enough of the financial instruments. I am somewhat embarrassingly ignorant of the actual details of how I can manage my portfolio without paying someone to do it for me. [more inside]

Radical approaches to employers supporting caretakers

I've been reading a lot (mostly in the US, but also some other countries) regarding how balancing work and caretaking (for children, partners, elderly parents, even self) is impossible for many people. I'm looking for information on where employers are effective in supporting the caretakers who work for them. [more inside]

Bank issues

I want to send money to someone in need. My US bank is refusing to accept my Bill Pay requests to send a check. Thus far three have failed. I tried Zelle, but it put the request on hold and demanded I call it. But I am in Europe and neither my US eSim nor my European Sim are letting me dial the 800# to verify my existence. I cannot download the Cash app because, again, I am in Europe. Is wiring the money my only solution? [more inside]

Yet Another What Is This Job Question

You go to work (ideally remotely). You have tasks, and you do them, and maybe you go to some meetings here or there but mostly you are left alone to do your tasks. You are, critically, not management of any kind. You make decent middle-class money. What is your job? [more inside]

Buying a house from a relative over time?

Short version: My sister lives in the house we grew up in. It's fully paid off. She and her husband have ongoing money struggles. I'd like to help them out by buying the house from them slowly, thereby providing an income stream for them. Of course, there's lots of snowflakes inside: [more inside]

Pennies from Heaven

I have what I believe is a two gallon jar of mixed loose change. At my bank I can pay a flat fee of $6 for them to count it, vs using their CoinStar style machine for a 2.5% fee. (I don't want to cash out for gift cards at the grocery store). What is the likely best deal?

What should I do if I am going to miss my next credit card payments?

I have a 10K and a 3K maxed-out credit cards, never missed a payment, and I know that I am going to miss my payments next month. With my own situation and family needed to help, I am out of idea. What should I do? Would credit card company (banks) help me out if I call them to discuss options? I receive credit card offers because my credit is still rather high, would taking the offer help? I also see ads on debt relief programs, is it better to get in touch with them now? [more inside]

Personal finance in the time of Trump 2.0.

I'm seeing endless posts on Threads and BlueSky about people making financial preparations for Trump's second term, including buying appliances / electronics before the tariffs hit, learning how to cook extremely cheaply, and otherwise economize. How much is actually known about Trump's eventual impact on our wallets, and are you making similar preparations in your own life?

What to expect when calling IRS for advice

I have a question about tax returns. I want to call the IRS about it because I can't find enough clear information online/on the IRS website to answer my question. But I'm also filled with crushing dread and anxiety that they won't help me or this will lead to some big scary punishment. For those who have experience of calling the IRS to ask for their guidance, please can you share what to expect? [more inside]

Anonymous career options?

I’ve recently been told by different people that for careers as diverse and seemingly not… self-promotey as ESL teacher and dietitian, in order to be competitive and succeed you need an “online presence” and a “personal brand “. Please tell me this isn’t true. [more inside]

The Beginning Of The End

It's time to move on from my current job, but I am 61, and after 30 years in IT support I need to find something else to do. Flat-out retirement has to wait a few more years. I don't really have good idea of what I might like to do, or what I might reasonably be qualified to do, or what employers will even consider from someone like me. My wife's job is the better-paid one with excellent benefits, and we aren't up to our ears in debt, so there's not too much pressure to find something to match my current salary. I just want to do something I might actually enjoy and won't invite a lot of stress and can make last for the next five years or so. Help me brainstorm this.

Federal government jobs during what feels like apocalyptic times?
